Canton Marathon

Chad W. Lutz
Founded in 1805, the City of Canton area stands as one of the greatest shrines to American football. From hosting the Pro Football Hall of Fame to ranking as one of the highest recruit producing cities in the country, it’s clear that gridiron is king. Every year, thousands of American football enthusiasts make the trek to the football mecca for the annual induction ceremonies held in early August.

But with the rise in running as a popular national sport, Canton city officials seized the opportunity to put together an event they hope will feed off the enthusiasm for the Pro Football Hall of Fame events. Making its debut this weekend, June 17, the Canton Marathon hopes to kick off a series of races to be held annually and draw people to the city which has been making improvements to its social landscape in recent years.

Events include a full marathon, half marathon, 10k, and marathon relay. The Canton Marathon also features a wheelchair division for marathon and half marathon events. Finishers receive a commemorative medal specific to each event. Participants receive a goodie bag including discounts to area restaurants and stores and a gender-specific Nike race shirt. The Canton Marathon also features a health and fitness expo sponsored by Aultman Aultcare held at the Canton Memorial Civic Center Friday, June 15, from 3:00pm to 8:00pm and Saturday, June 16, from 10:00am to 6:00pm. Spots are still available for select events and registration will be held at the marathon expo both Friday and Saturday. Race participants will also be able to change events at the health and fitness expo. Extra fees may apply.

In addition to all of the usual racing excitement for the big kids, the Canton Marathon also offers up fun for the younger crowd. Children will be able to participate in the Kid’s Ultimate Marathon Dash held Saturday, June 16, for children ages 3 – 11. The Kid’s Ultimate Marathon Dash includes a short race at Fawcett Stadium and will be followed by the marathon pasta party at the Cultural Center for the Arts next door to the Canton Memorial Civic Center.

I could close this article out by telling you to kick a winning goal and bring the whole family out or to run your dreams right into the end zone with the Canton Marathon, but I won’t. I will tell you that if you’re looking for a great, new summer marathon or looking to take part in the inaugural festivities, the Canton Marathon offers exactly what you’re looking for. However, be careful out there. Temperatures are forecast to reach in excess of 89 degrees on race day. Prepare by drinking at least 16 ounces of water prior to the starting gun and drinking at least 4 oz. of water every 20 minutes during the race. Heat like that can kill and it would be a shame to have something so tragic plague something so monumental for the City of Canton and all those participating.

Online registration closes at 5:00pm June 12.

Event pricing at the Expo:

Marathon: $100
5-Person Relay: $70
Wheelchair: $100
Half Marathon: $85
10K: $60
Kid’s Ultimate Marathon Dash: $20
