After more than 15 years of existence, Cleveland natives Chimaira have officially disbanded as of Thursday, September 4th. The news came on the heels of a succession of band member resignations. First, lead guitarist Emil Werstler left Chimaira on September 2nd. The following day, all of the remaining members, with the exception for vocalist Mark Hunter, also quit Chimaira. Drummer Austin D’Amond, keyboardist Sean Zatorsky, guitarist Matt Szlachta and bassist Jeremy Creamer, issued a joint statement through The PRP:

In light of recent news, the rest of the band have decided to part ways with Chimaira. For us this was a great stepping stone, and an honor to play these songs live, and fulfill an incredible legacy. This was an an excellent platform to help continue playing music, when our collective bands [Dååth, Bleed the Sky and Dirge Within] either ended or went on a hiatus. Chimaira was an amazing experience and we look forward to future music endeavors with each other.”

The next day, founding vocalist Mark Hunter declared Chimaira was officially over.

Chimaira has been a constant presence in the Cleveland metal scene since their inception in 1998. Over the last decade, they have annually hosted "Chimaira Christmas", a dual purpose event, both as a massive show for the band and a gift to all of their fans.
During the early 2000s, Chimaira fell into the New Wave of American Heavy Metal, the post-grunge movement characterized by a more brutal, heavy-hitting style propagated by bands like Pantera and Slipknot. Chimaira certainly left their mark on the landscape of heavy metal, especially in Cleveland.

The break up came immediately after the band's most recent tour with The Plot In You, Upon This Dawning, Allageon, and Silence the Messenger. Their last show was in Oklahoma City on August 30th. As the former Chimaira members stated above, they do not intend to stop making music, just not as Chimaira. The band was scheduled to hold "Chimaira Christmas '14" this year, but as of this writing the show has been cancelled.
