December 2015 Singles Roundup

Nick Lotz

It's time to review the best singles from December 2015 in the world according to Nick.

"Emoji VIP" – Pegboard Nerds

I was personally introduced to Pegboard Nerds when they appeared on Infected Mushroom’s album Friends on Mushrooms on the track “Nerds on Mushrooms.” If you’re not familiar with what any of that means, I recommend you check it out.
Little known fact, Pegboard Nerds is comprised of two people, Alexander Odden and Michael Parsberg, whose last names form the anagram “Pegboard Nerds”
Pegboard Nerds’ single is a remix of a song they released earlier this year, which is exactly the same in every way, shape and form. I can’t tell if this is an elaborate joke or if Odden and Parsberg are making a cash grab.
“Hey now/come on now/it’s alright/let your emotions show”
It opens with this wonderful, melancholic chorus before the drop which is wub-wubby in an incredibly fun and interesting kind of way. There’s not a lot to say about it other than it’s a truly joyful, chaotic song.

"Wonka Bar" – Charley Marley

I’ve never heard someone talk so artfully about a big black dick.
“I got that wonka bar/wha what/I got that wonka bar/ who who”
Why is he rapping about candy?
“Call me Charlie with the chocolate/on a Launchpad in my rocket/with a golden ticket so it’s on me”
Oh wait…
“I got that big bad bang boom/thick strong mushroom”
Yep. Now it makes sense.
Just look at these lyrics. Is there anything to be said that hasn’t been said already?
Besides the Charley Marley’s apparent obsession with his phallus, it’s an upbeat tune with fun vibes that I could see making the rounds at the dance floors.
He’s opening for Fall Out Boy on their new tour, and there isn’t a whole lot of information out there about him. Hopefully, he keeps making music as good as this.

"FloriDaDa" – Animal Collective

Animal Collective is my favorite band, hands down. There, I had to write that down because it’s been harnessed inside of me for god knows how long.
Their lyrics are nearly always cryptic, and their new single, “FloriDaDa,” is no different.
The chorus though, is fairly self-explanatory.
(Repeat x 4)
Note: DaDa is a surrealist philosophy of exuberant joy in which nothing makes sense (i.e. your typical Floridian).
Animal Collective is an experimental pop group from Baltimore, Maryland. The two most notable members are Avey Tare (David Portner) and Panda Bear (Noah Lennox), both of whom have had moderately successful solo careers alongside their A.C success.
Their music is nearly always weird, but in that wonderful, experimental, happy kind of way that will get your serotonin levels grooving.
They’re perhaps best known for 2009’s Merriweather Post Pavilion. This album has been widely hailed by critics as one of the most important albums of the 21st century thus far.
I saw them live at Coachella in 2011. It was a very strange experience, characterized by monotonous, esoteric beats and intense light visuals; unforgettable, to say the least.

"Genghis Khan" – Miike Snow

“I get a little bit Genghis Khan/I don’t want you to get it on/with nobody else but me.”
This anthem of masculinity and possessiveness is funky as shit. It’s awesome.
”I wanna make up my mind/but I don’t know myself”
What disaffected twenty something male can’t relate to these lyrics? To those who say they can’t; phonies, all of you.
Miike Snow (pronounced ma-ik snow), is a Swedish pop band made up by Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg. They’re best known for their single “Animal,” which made the rounds on the dance circuit in 2009.

"Worry" – Jack Garrat

“Don’t you worry about it/let me worry about it”
I don’t really know anything about Jack Garrat, but I sure do like this song. It’s very bluesy.
“Pick up all the pieces you left/….Try and give yourself some rest…”
Oh Jack Garrat, you totally get my overworked millennial ass.
Jack Garrat is from some obscure part of the U.K and this single is off the debut album he’ll release February 2016.

"Home" – EMBRZ

“I’ll be here waiting for you when you come home”
Will you, EMBRZ?
“It’s been a long hard fucking day”
I kno rite?!
It’s a sad, yet beautiful song, about dedication and lost love.
