Cleveland Fashion Week

GlamJam Event Kicks Off Annual Fashion Festival

Hallie Witwer
The beginning of May brings a multitude of style-grounded events to the Rock N' Roll City as Cleveland Fashion Week takes over downtown. I was able to attend the GlamJam, a runway event that combines live music, art, fashion, and even a little bit of dance to make an eclectic evening of entertainment enjoyable for all ages. Held in Cleveland’s gorgeous 5th Street Arcade building, the event included trunk shows, freebies of everything from food and drink to hair products, live music, dancing, fire throwing, and henna tattoos. The crowd ranged from the stylish elderly to adorable youngsters, and no matter the age, people there were dressed to impress.

Before the runway show, crowds milled along the 5th Street Arcade lobby testing samples of sweets and different drinks. Designers had their clothes on display and jewelry makers laid out impressive spreads of colorful and intricate works of art. Henna and airbrush tattoo artists contributed to the night’s theme of “wearable art” as they tatted up eager fashionistas. As attendees slowly took their seats along the runway, live bands played their hearts out for the growing crowd. The music covered a wide spectrum, from folky sounds to psychedelic rock. One band’s lead singer surprised the audience as she did a quick change from a flowing gown to a shorter dress and proceeded to do a complicated and energetic hula-hoop routine up and down the runway. Around 9:45pm the music came to the end and the much-anticipated runway show began.

The show included works by a multitude of designers and gave viewers a taste of elegant, intriguing, and certainly racy fashion. Ranging from duct tape creations to outfits made out of little more than body paint, the designs were entertaining and impressive all at once. The show was not just for women either; there was an entire line dedicated to just men’s fashion. So gentlemen, next year if your girl says she wants to hit up an event at Cleveland Fashion Week, don’t automatically think your only option is to hang back! There were plenty of stylin’ men in the audience who weren’t just hanging in there. They were having just as much fun as the ladies!
Boys: They wanna have fun.

As the evening ended and the crowds filtered out into downtown Cleveland they were met with a show of light as a fire juggler lit up the streets with her skillful display of danger and beauty. It was the perfect ending to a night filled with color, art and overall outstanding imagery. At fifteen bucks a ticket, I would say it certainly ends up being worth it between the live bands, goodie bags, and free food and drink, just to name a few of the event’s perks. I definitely think I’ll be attending another Cleveland Fashion Week event at some point in the future. This experience definitely piqued my interest, and besides, when else do I have a better opportunity to bust out my favorite pair of purple denim pants!?
Now, I couldn't just leave you with only a couple of the far-out styles on display at this year's GlamJam. The following are some of the other ecclectic and entertaining fashions sported by models at this year's event:
