NAMI Walks - Taking Steps to Fight Mental Illness

Chad W. Lutz
One of seven Ohio NAMI events, the Tri County NAMI Walks event held this upcoming weekend, October 1, 2011, looks to build on the success of last year’s walk. The 3-mile walk to benefit the National Alliance on Mental Illness kicks off at 10:00am at Munroe Falls Metro Park in Munroe Falls, Ohio. Walker registration begins at 8:30am, with a host of booths and venders on hand to entertain participants before the walk gets underway.

So far, participants have raised over $32,500. Donations are being taken in all denominations. Registration ends at 10:00am. NAMI will continue taking donations in the days following the event. Participants wishing to walk as a team should have team information ready Saturday morning.

Come join fellow concerned Buckeyes this Saturday, October 1, 2011, and help raise money and awareness. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, roughly 4.5% of the U.S. population or 18,000,000 people suffer from serious mental illness. Young adults 18-25 represent the largest percentage of those with serious mental illness (nearly 8% of 18-25 year olds).
