North Market

Matt MacDonald
Located at 59 Spruce St. in downtown Columbus, North Market is the only public market in the city limits and calls home to dozens of individual merchants who bring their unique items and foods to the general public seven days a week.

When I visited the Market towards the end of April, I was in awe of what was presented to me. The first thing I noticed was the smell: fresh baked goods, prepared foods that you couldn’t get anywhere else and specialty foods that only Columbus can offer (They even have a chocolatier!), all of them vying for attention from your olfactory senses.

Slightly overshadowing the great food was how clean and well lit it everything was. There wasn’t a scrap of dirt anywhere. I have been to public markets before and the cleanliness levels were less than adequate, but North Market had a level of cleanliness that rivaled any chain grocer on their opening day. That level of pride and dedication is worth the trip alone.

In addition to fresh foods that you can’t get anywhere else, as well as truly original cookware, tableware and other gifts, North Market also offers one of the best eating areas I have ever seen. The entire upper-level of the market is an eating/lounging area that goes the circumference of their entire sales floor. With the addition of free Wi-Fi, North Market serves an ideal place to get some good food and get a little bit of people watching done in the process.

If there is one negative thing that I have to say about my entire North Market experience it would be that finding a place to park, for free, is an impossible task. The North Market itself has ample parking that you have to pay to use and there are additional parking spots off of the property that are all metered. If you are an out-of-towner it can be a bit of a turn-off to the whole North Market experience. However, it should be kept in mind that you have to pay to park just about anywhere in downtown Columbus.

The North Market is located at 59 Spruce St., Columbus, Ohio 43215.
