Rubber City Meltdown / Akron Cycling Festival

Chad W. Lutz
On Saturday August 21st, 2010 the City of Akron with the support from the Clif Corporation, Eddy’s Bike Shop, the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad and the Akron Marathon will bring the 2nd annual Rubber City Meltdown and Akron Cycling Festival held in the Northside Lofts parking lot on N Main St. in downtown Akron.

The event will feature a criterium race where competitors will compete to complete the most laps in a set amount of time. The course is a one-mile closed circuit around the Northside Lofts adjacent to the All-American Bridge. Registration for the race is $30.00 and closes on Friday (August 20th) at 8:59p.m.

Along with the race is a comprehensive cycling and arts festival that highlights the Cuyahoga Valley National Park’s Blue Line, a 23.5-mile scenic rail line that runs through both the city and the park. Tickets for the Blue Line Tour are $20.00. Registration is from 8:00am – 10:00am.

If your pocket book is looking a little emaciated as of late, you might want to try the Trail to Rail Ride. Plan a scenic bike ride or relaxing walk along the Towpath from Northside to Peninsula and enjoy a complimentary ride back on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. Train schedules are available on the events website (www.rubbercitymeltdown.com). Registration begins at 8:00am to acquire free boarding passes.

Whether you’re an avid biker looking to compete, a lover of the Natural, or just looking to spend some quality time with the family, this is one event you might not want to pass up.
