Snow Days

The New Winter Retreat at Progressive Field

Chad W. Lutz
It’s the bottom of the ninth; two outs. There’s a runner on third and two strikes on the batter. You can feel the electricity at Progressive Field. 42,310 fans on their feet and screaming, attempting to elicit a miracle from their favorite players. It’s blustery in Cleveland, a scant 32 degrees. The pitcher winds up for the delivery.

Here it comes…

Suddenly the crowd erupts as two kids on ice skates and a young couple careening on inner tubes crash onto the infield. Snow machines spit fresh powder over the November landscape and a few fans stop for a moment to relive the glory days of the Wahoo on the Jumbotron. By now you’re probably scratching your head as to why two kids and a young couple would be interrupting a bottom-of-the-ninth-come-from-behind type situation on inner tubes and ice skates. The answer couldn’t be any cooler.

Beginning November 25, Progressive Field and the Cleveland Indians will reopen the ballpark formerly known as “The Jake” with a brand new look. Now in its second year, Snow Days return to Cleveland and offer the whole family a delightful way to enjoy the bitter outdoors this winter.

A single-day ticket entitles guests to three ice skating rinks and a massive inner tube hill which propels brave sled riders 30mph down a ramp extending from the left-center bleachers to the mid-right field foul line. The event is perfect for families with young children and even grown adults just looking to have some good ole’ innocent fun at The Jake. The skating rinks include The Rookie Rink for kids and beginner skaters, The Frozen Diamond, which takes up the majority of the infield and proves ideal for novice and advanced skaters, and The Frozen Mile, America’s first skating rink in a non-symmetrical pattern.

Tickets for the event are currently on sale. The Snow Days season lasts from opening day on November 25 through January 16, 2012. General admission tickets start at $5.00 but exclude tubing and ice skating. Guest wishing to participate in ice skating and tubing activities must purchase an additional ticket; $20 in advance for tubing only or $25 in advance for skating only. Combo tickets are available for $25 in advance. Ticket prices increase during holiday weeks. Purchase tickets online by visiting www.cleveland.indians.mlb.com.

We all know Ohio Winter is just around the corner. Every year we tell ourselves, “Maybe it won’t be so bad?” and every year we find out the very opposite of that sentiment. This year, why not turn the winter warzone into a wonderland with family and friends? Although a fairly unexpected place to find wintertime fun, plan a trip to Progressive Field and bring the whole family to Snow Days to keep Life cool when it’s way too cold.
