On Saturday, February 11, 2012, a local Ohio community is getting together to support a family in need. The event, The Heart of the Lyons, a one-mile charity walk, will take place in downtown Garrettsville to raise money and awareness for the Lyons family.
The Garrettsville family awoke to quite a shock Christmas morning to find their son Porter, 18, was severely ill and in need of emergency heart surgery. After receiving corrective surgery to repair a dilated ventricle partially disabling Porter’s body from pumping blood, Cleveland Clinic surgeons placed oxygen pumps throughout his body to help stimulate blood flow.
Porter eventually received a heart transplant. Thanks to the doctors, nurses, and surgeons at the Cleveland Clinic, Porter was able to pump blood and walk under his own power a few days later. However, due to the severity and suddenness of the events, the Lyons family was unable to experience Christmas as they had planned. So, in order to give the Garrettsville family the Christmas they deserve, albeit a few weeks later, Jacob Vaughn and other fellow community members created the event in Porter and his family’s honor.
The event begins in Northgate in Garretsville and will wind through a short one-mile course. Refreshments will be provided before, during, and after the event as well as t-shirts for all registered participants. Red paper hearts will also be for sale for $1 with all the proceeds going to the Lyons family.
Come out for a great way to kick off the spring season or just to help an Ohio family in need. Show your true colors by signing up for the event, which is already open on eventbrite.com.
