Winter Blues? Have No Fear, Spring Fest Is Just Around the Corner!

Hallie Witwer
We can’t deny that we’ve had a pretty mild winter so far this year. However, just because we haven’t had to dig out our cars or trudge through two feet of snow to get from the parking lot to our jobs doesn’t mean that those pesky winter blues have completely stayed away. It’s still dark much longer than the normal human psyche prefers and soaking in the sun on the beaches of Lake Erie seems some distant dream I had in my childhood as opposed to the reality of my Saturdays several months back. I understand that spring and summer are NOT here yet, trust me…I realize this, but I just wanted to write a little piece previewing some of the cool events to come here in the Cleveland area. Ya know, just to get our blood pumping again.

Saturday, March 17 is Cleveland’s St. Patty’s Day Parade. Beginning at 1 p.m. at the intersection of East 18th and Superior, this parade is never a let down. It will be traveling southwest on Superior Ave to East Roadway if you’re wondering where to set up camp. Last year I had an incredible time and plan on being in on all the action once again. Some advice- the bars are CRAZY, so make sure you pregame. Nothing makes the parade even more awesome than it already is than a few (many) drinks to warm you up.

March 22 - April 1 are the dates for the Cleveland International Film Festival! Feeling a little starved for some culture? Come up to Cleveland and take in a film or two that week to get your fix. Every year they have over 150 feature films and 130 shorts that come from about 60 different countries. Remember, you don’t have to go to L.A. or New York City to see what I’m talking about. This is in Cleveland, folks! I went last year and was blown away by what I saw. On top of great art, the overall atmosphere is extremely energetic and positive. There are local announcers before every film so you get to learn about your community, too. Go to ClevelandFilm.org for all the deets.

The 2012 Hessler Street Fair will be held on May 19 and 20. It will have local artwork, food, music, poetry (Yes, poetry! Worth checking out just for that), and warmer weather for all. Located on Hessler Road in Cleveland, Ohio, this is a great way to kick off your summer. If you need an address for your GPS they suggest entering 11300 Hessler Road, Cleveland, Ohio. Come with some cash, because you’re definitely going to find things you simply can’t leave without. Take this opportunity to buy a one of a kind item that you certainly won’t find anywhere else. HesslerStreetFair can keep you updated on everything they have planned!

Lastly, the date has been set for the Cleveland Pride Parade for 2012! The 24th annual Pride Parade will be Saturday, June 23, at Voinovich Park from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. This event is attended by both the LGBT community as well as Northeast Ohio’s straight community. So, come one, come all! It’s just a great event with a positive atmosphere that promotes acceptance and celebrates how far the movement has come. It’s still a couple of months in the future so details are still being hacked out, but continue to check out ClevelandPride.org for further updates as the event gets closer.

So don’t let that snow to the face or drain of daylight keep your spirits down. Just remember that before long we will all be either laying on the beach, taking in endless amazing films, enjoying the spring parades, or picking out new dyes from all the rad street fairs! Spring- bring it on because I am SO ready for you!
