Yellowtail Japanese Seafood Buffet

Chad W. Lutz
Elegant, classy, ornate; these are probably the last descriptive adjectives on your mind as you wrap up yet another gut busting meal at Joe Shmo oriental buffet. Usually, the end of such a meal comes complimentary with grunts, groans, moans, and expletives (oh, and those loveable fortune cookies, too). My New Year’s Eve adventure to Yellowtail Japanese Sushi Buffet Restaurant was different, however, and it was a trip I am more than willing to make time and time again.

It may or may not come as a surprise, but Americans love buffets. What started as a Swedish tradition involving shots of liquor lined on a central table at galas and banquets now stands as a multi-billion dollar-a-year industry. Players like Golden Corral, Hometown Buffet, and a handful of other buffet chains almost exploit the fact we love to eat and eat a lot and manage thousands of locations all over the country.

I did not find any of the usual trappings as I stepped through the golden handled glass doors of Yellowtail Japanese Sushi Buffet Restaurant’s front entrance. From the chilly confines of my tiny Del Sol in the parking lot, the inside of the restaurant looked warm and inviting from the street. What really surprised me was the décor. As you enter the front doors, hard marble flooring shimmers in the soft, Hollywood-style lighting. A large food bar in the center of the restaurant catches your eye and you suddenly realize you’re basically about to eat from a buffet by chandelier.
Kinda puts you in the mood (to eat), doesn’t it? (Lutz 2011)
Yellowtail Japanese Sushi Buffet Restaurant offers one of the widest selections of sushi I’ve ever seen, in a buffet or otherwise. It was makizushi and nigirizushi galore. Names like The Dirty Roll, Rock N Roll, Esmeralda, Dynamite Roll, and Caribbean Roll enticed me to the point of near oblivion. I felt like my stomach couldn’t keep up with how many trips my mouth wanted to take. Three plates later and I was a glutton. Everything was delicious and delectable, right down to the Green Tea ice cream.

Even if you’re not that into sushi, Yellowtail Japanese Sushi Buffet and Restaurant offers all your oriental buffet favorites, including fried and white rice, General Tso’s chicken, sweet and sour chicken, chow lo mein, pork dumplings in soy sauce, and crab rangoon. Yellowtail even served sautéed veggies, tofu, edamame, and fresh fruit for meatless treat seekers.

The sushi buffet and Japanese restaurant hosts wireless internet access, which makes Yellowtail a great place to meet to discuss business plans or share family photos over delicious food. Yellowtail seats around 300 people and by the end of our night we definitely saw about 150 walk through the door and there was still plenty room to spare in the main dining room as well as about another 75 to 100 seats easily available in the conference room, party room, and at the full bar.
